open your eyes vs vanilla sky

After seeing the Spanish original I wanted to watch Vanilla Sky again so I rented it and it arrived on Saturday. Abre Los Ojos is the better film. One of the big differences that separates Vanilla Sky from Open Your Eyes is the fact that in Vanilla Sky, David Aames character is actually being televised to a future world. A beautifully obscure shot of Cesar on the dancefloor. He's inspired by her in such a way that it's hard not to root for the guy because we've all been there before, high on love and ready to take on the world. Vanilla Sky is a beautiful remake of the Spanish film “Abre Los Ojos” (Open Your Eyes) by Cameron Crowe. That scream that he utters when he is hit, is so damn hilarious. Yeah Bill Murray was one of my favorite parts in that film. "If anyone knows those Spanish lines, please help. Boy was I pleasantly surprised when I started to really relate to the character once he started falling into his downward spiral of a nightmare. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, News & Discussion about Major Motion Pictures, Press J to jump to the feed. :). Most of the time we are not sure if what we are watching is really happening or whether it is a profoundly disturbing nightmare. They reach into the heart of you and harken back to those days when you believed or still believe in a higher love, a better future, and a world where anything is possible if you follow your heart. This is quite probably the best film he has made so far(though I haven't seen Mar Adentro yet). A beautiful shot of an empty Times Square. Thanks for the kind words of encouragement ric. Upon my recent second viewing, I realized how many hints there are towards the twist in the film, and how many ideas and subjects for good discussion that are in the film. Woody did an amazing job as well that bad-ass. And I was intrigued throughout the film, I think even moreso than with "VS.". if she wd have supported him then he may not hv signed up and committed suicide. VS is loud, brash, and coarse. The majority of the good stuff in VS is stolen directly from ALO. I'm still new at the blog scene so I'll continue to hone my craft and search for new and interesting films to review. The handsome and wealthy César (Eduardo Noriega) is very successful with women and is having difficulties to get rid off Nuria (Najwa Nimri) that is his last affair. Thanks for being so bold. She helps him up and tells him that they are going to get through this. I watched Vanilla Sky first. Yes, I am ten minutes in and already the editing is so much tighter. After dinner we are shifted to the happy couple in bed and Cesar wakes up and walks to the bathroom. Nuria has more grace, and more depth. Vanilla Sky is a copy in English of this original Spanish movie released in 1997. Intriguing and Fascinating Journey to Paranoia. When they get up everyone has vanished and they are now all alone in the buildings expansive courtyard. He takes a total douche bag, rich kid, cock-blocker in the form of David Aames, and turns him into a sympathizing every-man just looking for his piece of love in the world. No question about that. Yeah for some reason the two films just grab me everytime and sweep me up in the story. I really feel the hurt in Cameron's dialogue and for the sheer fact that her character is not on drugs and she's acting like this on her own makes it even that more compelling when she totally loses it. This movie has concepts that have been used by many others. I liked Vanilla Sky better because of it...I'm a mushy romantic at heart who loves happy hollywood endings...Mary. We also get to see a glimpse into David's funeral and what became of Sofia. I know exactly what you mean. I think that the relationship between Cruise's character and Sofia is much more fleshed out and I feel that they had more of a special connection between each other. Instead it elaborates on some of the theories that the original brought to light and even switches some of those ideas to make its own statement about the meaning of the film. Amenábar creates his own music, the script, the funny Spanish talking, and directs the fantastic performances. It was made on a shoestring with hardly any real actors. He says his goodbyes and then approaches the ledge where he is told if he jumps from the building, the shock will bring him back. It's a "love will find a way" kind of moment. Thanks again for checking the review out. Cesar and Antonio try to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Ventura told him he had a panel of observers who were waiting for him to choose whether or not to wake up--I'm thinking because they were LE/Oasis reps who could initiate the process of bringing him back. Anyway, they all mentioned that it was very thorough and helpful. My first Alejandro Amenábar movie and I liked it. Cameron Crowe was the wrong fit for the remake. I realise that so much more has been covered within the the first ten minutes and it feels less sanitised, less "Hollywood.". I'll never be able to watch vanilla sky again. Update: I watched both. Maybe part of my reaction to this is because I saw Open Your Eyes first and knew the twist when I saw Vanilla Sky, but the hints were still overkill. First the acting. After a night of talking with Sofia, César is picked up by Nuria who crashes her car deliberately killing her and horribly disfiguring him. Cesar is reciting all the things that has happened to him since the accident, and piece by piece we start to figure out why he's in prison and why he's wearing that strange mask. He follows the same path from his dream and makes his way to the bathroom. However when surgery returns his looks he thinks everything is solved – but his dreams become more vivid blurring his sense of reality. User Ratings It's almost like the film slipped into Phantom of the Opera mode or the Hunchback of Notre Dame mode because here we are with a disfigured man who is now an outcast of normal society, pining over a beautiful woman. Then the doctors tell him that they are able to fix his face. He falls at a tremendous pace and just as he reaches the ground the shot goes to black and we hear a voice say, "Open Your Eyes". I haven't seen VS, and on this evidence, have no need to. Thanks for checking out the blog and the positive comments. The other parts of the films are mostly equal to one another (except Cruz' looks, which are much better than in Vanilla Sky, which is mostly due to the stupid haircut she had in that American film) or should I say, the rest Cameron Crowe copied from Abre los ojos. He shows up drunk as a skunk and kind of pissed off at Cesar, but he eventually shrugs it off and leaves the party, leaving both Cesar and Sofia to get to know each other better. Although the plot is confusing at times, a second viewing helps to untangle the convoluted story about dreams and reality. Well, I'll disagree with all of you and say that "Abre Los Ojos" is better. I mean David Aames is head over heels for the girl. Eduardo Noriega stars as Cesar; an overly handsome playboy that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He puts so much of himself into the father figure and sells it so well that you're automatically hooked each time he comes up on the screen. See it for yourself. Not so with Cameron Diaz's portrayal of that same character in VS, who comes off as a spoiled tramp whose decision to kill herself seems like a hissy fit. Vanilla Sky is a great movie. Metacritic Reviews. She comes back and they hang out for a bit. Later that night he eventually corners Sofia and he reminisces on their first meeting, reenacting their first interaction. Eduardo Nriega is a rich womanizer who prowls the parties and bars of Madrid, intent on bagging chicks. Like Amenábar's other films, this is slow and deliberate(whereas Crowe's version, in comparison, seems somewhat rushed, trying to get to the end as fast as possible, despite being a full half hour longer), and it really works to the films benefit. I also feel that Cameron Diaz's character gets a lot more back-story and exposition then her Nuria counterpart. First off good job :) second i would like to add that i think vanilla sky is underated big time , when i say this i mean most people i know are like "thats a stupid movie or it doesnt make sense" well if your a big movie lover like me it makes sense and everything from the directing to the music was awesome.Open your eyes was a darker film to me and one i own that i havent watched has much has vanilla sky and i think its because the more feel good moments with vanilla sky leave you a bit happier than open your eyes , example the cesar character like said isnt has cocky has david and overall after the accident you cant really relate to him due to the devasting effects to his face i mean this that david was scarred yes and in pain but cesar looks like a complete diffrent person overall like it isnt him you know ?? Vanilla Sky is a 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film directed, written, and co-produced by Cameron Crowe. It is an English-language adaptation of Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 Spanish film Open Your Eyes, which was written by Amenábar and Mateo Gil, with Penélope Cruz reprising her role from the original film. "there's five people alive in the whole world and one of 'em is Bill fuckin' Murray" gotta love Woody. He's far more cocky then Alejandro's Cesar and actually kind of funny when things start getting messed up in his life. Think it all the way through, and Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla Sky" is a scrupulously moral picture. This movie is so much better than Vanilla Sky. This last scene is very mind blowing and you really feel sorry for Antonio as he grapples with his very existence. While watching a TV program about a dog coming back to life after being frozen, they decide to draw caricatures of each other. Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, The Fabulous Journey to the Center of the Earth, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key. He proceeds to get shit faced and the night then turns into a blur. Abre Los Ojos is much better than Vanilla Sky, Just great entertainment from beginning to end. What she is paying attention to is Cesar and she's acting like a person that has nothing left to live for. Although I didn't get to see 'Vanilla Sky' in 2001, when I got the chance to see it was still a relatively recent movie. Cesar wakes from a pleasant dream about Sofia and into a nightmare real world where his face is gruesomely disfigured. She basically believes that if she can't have Cesar then no one can, so she puts the pedal to the metal and steers right off the road, propelling the car down a hillside until it crashes with bone crunching force into a dilapidated stone wall. The scream rises to a pitch and then we cut to Cesar waking up in his bed. How he does it is beyond me, but I remember when I first sat in the theaters to watch this film I wondered how I was going to be able to relate to such a tool as the character was first portrayed in the beginning moments of the movie. The two interact well and you can see that they are hitting it off quite well, but then you remember that poor Pelayo is being cock-blocked and you kind of feel bad for the guy. Open Your Eyes      5 out of 5 stars          A timeless classic of, Vanilla Sky              5 out of 5 stars          An amazing remake that. Then Cesar tells Antonio about how the doctors called him up telling him about a miraculous new procedure that could repair his face to it's former state. He remembers meeting up with Sofia at her dance class and asking her out to a club.
